Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
Like so many others – I fell into recruitment. Before entering recruitment, I qualified as a chartered accountant in Big 4 – and let’s just say – corporate recovery was not my ‘calling’. I laughingly tell people the only area I excelled at was my role as Social Committee Manager and engaging with clients. So of course – recruitment was a natural next step.I joined Hays in 1998 in Brisbane when the Brisbane office had around 10 or so people in it. And over the next 20 years, I had a great career run with Hays in a variety of roles both here in Brisbane and in Dublin, Ireland. The last 10 years was very much an internally focused leadership role around business unit growth and expansion across a variety of disciplines (finance; HR; office support, contact centre, legal, heavy industry). After 20 years with Hays, I was ready for a change and to take my career back to client engagement.Fast-forward to now – and I am a Director with Sharp & Carter in HR. I thoroughly enjoy partnering with HR Leaders across all sectors – both in providing career coaching support to those seeking new opportunities, and as trusted recruitment partner in assessing technical and cultural fit for my clients. And it’s so nice to say – after all of these years – I still love my job!
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
There has never been a more difficult time than now to answer this question. With economic and international environments so uncertain – it’s very hard to predict how 2023 will end. Whilst I believe there will be a softening in the market, I still think quality candidates with engagement capability will always have opportunities – it might just take a little bit longer to convert.
I believe the new ways of flexible working (thanks to Covid) really puts the spotlight on good leadership as well as delivery and outcomes at all levels – and that’s here to stay.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
Generally speaking, speed in a recruitment process has never mattered more. But of equal importance is how the Employer demonstrates it’s value proposition to the candidate. The ‘why’ alignment between the Employer and Candidate is what equates to real engagement and retention.
