Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
I fell into recruitment after being a failed restauranter in my early twenties. After a couple of different roles with big agencies, I ventured out into AFL player management only to return 12 months later. I was rang as a reference and after an hour’s chat was asked if I would interview for the role. From there I had 10 amazing years with the Bayside Group and was mentored by some great people. I enjoyed great relationships with the board and to this day am thankful for the support I was given by both owners and their families.As I was becoming a Dad for the first time I wanted to scratch that entrepreneurial itch and step back from an executive role to allow me the flexibility to be a present Dad. Hence Bastion Group was created where I’m back on the tools recruiting, home for breakfast, dinner and bedtime. Sure there are many challenges in your own business but I can’t believe how lucky we are in recruitment to work at hours that suit your lifestyle.
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
It’s been a lucrative couple of years in recruitment and sure things will tighten, as will the economy, but regardless of market conditions if you perform the recruitment fundamentals day after day all will be ok. I’m sure there are some interesting times ahead for the transactional recruiter, but those that have built and maintained relationships where there is a true value exchange will be fine. Simply be a good person and the rest will look after itself.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
Employers need to move fast in this candidate short market, but don’t just settle for what’s on offer. For employers, the business cost of hiring is expensive so trust your true partners, and your recruitment company and value their insights into the market. After all, we provide a Guarantee period so just as much as you don’t want to go through the process, we don’t want to be putting someone into a role that’s not a good fit. And thank you Employers for keeping our economy ticking over and providing employment so that we have such a low unemployment rate.
