Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
I started my recruitment career in 1999 sourcing software engineers across a variety of tech stacks for various clients in London. In 2006, I started my first UK based IT recruitment business before moving to Brisbane in 2012. After a few years back in agency recruitment, I realised there was a gap in the market for a more values led digitech recruitment business, so I founded JJP Talent Solutions.JJP helps early-stage startups, high growth scaleups and innovative SMEs to attract, recruit and retain tech talent with a unique methodology called “The Power of People”. I love helping candidates to find their ideal role and clients to find the perfect candidate. Over 23 years later, I still find a buzz when I make the right match happen!
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
Over the past 12 to 18 months, we have experienced an incredible jobs boom, particularly in software development, which has led to a severe shortage of talent. Due to various market conditions (inflation, rising interest rates, stock market volatility), the demand for talent will start to plateau. These market conditions and the threat of a potential recession will mean that candidates will want more stability and job security.
That said, there will continue to be a shortage of talent within the software development space so clients must continue to have strategies to attract and retain their people. Companies need to grow and nurture their talent pools as well as broadening their searches. Providing flexible work arrangements and a competitive salary will continue to be expected and be non-negotiable.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
Time is of the essence! Do not delay in providing CV and interview feedback and progressing to the offer stage because you will lose candidates. The market is highly competitive for candidates, and many are receiving multiple offers as well as counteroffers so the need to move quickly is absolutely paramount.
