Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
I started my career as Miss World Australia (that was my first actual job!) and ended up segueing into sales, which led to me recruiting for my first ever sales team. During the recruitment process, the sales candidates recommended me to their recruitment agent – who then ended up interviewing me and offering me a job!
I was in an agency for the first year of my recruitment career, won the agency’s Top Performer award at the end of that year, and then went into internal recruitment for 8 years because I wanted to become a true partner to the businesses I was recruiting for.
I decided to set up my own agency, Avanti Search, because I thought I could bring that “true partner” approach to an agency environment. Luckily Avanti has been very successful, which reaffirms to me that there is still a deep need for quality business partners in the Australian recruitment market.
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
White collar candidates will continue to place emphasis on high salaries and the flexibility to work from home in a hybrid fashion.
Companies will experiment more with AI during the recruitment process (writing job ads and interview Qs, screening prospective candidates) and they will find that the technology falls short of the mark.
There will be a return to partnering with quality recruitment agents as roles become unfilled for longer due to the currently uneasy market.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
“Today’s bargain hire is tomorrow’s poached employee!” Don’t offer a candidate a low salary because they haven’t asked for a higher one. Remunerate your new hires with a salary that is fair for the work they’ll be doing, and you’ll hold onto them for longer.
Also – trust your people. Let them work from home once they’ve settled into the job. That kind of flexibility is the number one request from candidates right now, so offering it will set you apart from your competitors.
