Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
Having qualified as an Electrician in 2005, I encountered a bad experience which completely turned me off the trade and like most people who work within recruitment, I fell into it. I commenced my recruitment journey in 2006 and in late 2009, I moved to Sydney to start the next stage of my career. Little did I know that I’d work for the same company for 12 years before making a change and becoming my own boss.
I love doing what I do because I get the opportunity to speak to like minded people on a technical level and I still get a buzz of helping candidates find the right employer!
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
With a skill shortage across the country, I think employers will be showing more flexibility when hiring but will also look at putting more investment into their team. Hopefully the skill shortage eases up a little.
I’d also like to see more face to face meetings taking place rather than using technology. Granted that many people now WFH, I think any business partnership benefits and is strengthened when meeting F2F.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
Spend time with your recruiter so they understand your business and your needs. Ensure that your recruiter is asking the right questions and ask yourself, “Do you feel they are the right person to assist you?”
I also think it’s important that you do weekly catchups with your team members. Ask them what they want to achieve. Is it a particular type of project or product? Do they want training on a popular or upcoming technology? Spend quality time with each individual to understand and look after them. Be loyal to them and they will be loyal to you.
