Tell us about your journey as a recruiter

I studied web development, digital design, game development and cognitive science in Sweden before moving to Australia in 2015. I had no intention of staying here long term, and saw recruitment as work life experience before moving back home and working at the equivalence of Centrelink. Sydney being as amazing as it is, I never looked back. I’ve been in technical recruitment for 5 years, with 1 year off scratching up on my developer skills. Creative design and game development are where I get really excited, and I found my happy place talking about tech all day but working with people.

What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?

It’s no secret we’re in a candidate driven market. As the borders open we will surely see more talent become available locally. However, some of the scars from huge international layoffs and the aftermath of the pandemic are and will still be very present. Candidates put more emphasis on a personal connection to brand, stability and company missions than before. As flexibility in the workplace becomes the new norm more candidates will be able to bring their current jobs with them as they travel, and having a consistent connection to the passive pool of talent will be important.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?

Showing enthusiasm and appreciation for the candidates who participate in the recruitment process is important even for the candidates that aren’t the perfect fit today. 12-24 months down the line they could very well be the perfect candidate for you or by all means working in the team whose hiring for YOUR dream job, and they will remember what the experience was now, then.
