Tell us about your journey as a recruiter
I got into executive recruitment over 20 years ago, having done some in-house recruitment in past roles. My first year was the hardest ever! I was a Candidate Manager and it was challenging just trying to learn the ropes and keep up with the demand. But I found something that I truly enjoyed, connecting with people and connecting people with others. I’ve had my own consultancy for 15 years and feel incredibly lucky to do what I do. People share their stories with me and entrust me with their careers, and clients entrust me to find someone who’s not only going to perform well in the job but also add to the culture of their business. A big responsibility! And one I take very much to heart.
What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?
I’m afraid I don’t have deep insight into where the industry is headed, but I do get a sense of confidence that our economy has recovered substantially, people are prepared to commit to bringing on new employees and employees are braving the job market again. Whilst there’s often a swing to in-house recruitment practices, I’m also seeing companies placing a lot of value in engaging a professional recruiter. We have the expertise and know our markets and the candidates in those markets.
What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?
Try to keep an open mind when it comes to hiring. Sometimes you will be pleasantly surprised with a candidate who is a bit lateral to what you were expecting. I was told years ago I would break down barriers for people and after several years in recruitment, I realised I did exactly that. That has been personally very rewarding and I love it when a client tells me I was right! 😉
