Tell us about your journey as a recruiter

My journey in recruitment began right after university, almost by accident – a path many of us stumble upon, I believe. Yet, from the outset, I sensed a deep resonance with this field, a sense that it was where I belonged. What’s truly fascinating is how my motivations have evolved over the past two decades.

At the start, I was captivated by the allure of the bustling city lights and the glamour of the industry – a classic case of being drawn to the shiny toys. However, this fascination was short-lived. The lack of career progression and ineffective leadership prompted a pivotal shift in my trajectory.

Leaving behind the world of agency recruitment, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, pursuing a Master’s degree in HR management and immersing myself in the public sector, specifically within Education. Yet, the rigid bureaucracy and slow pace left me yearning for a more dynamic environment.

My transition to heading up recruitment for a mid-sized management consultancy marked a turning point in my career. Over the subsequent seven years, I honed my skills and perspectives, culminating in my move from the UK to Australia. This shift not only broadened my horizons but also profoundly influenced my approach to recruitment.

Today, I thrive on a mindset anchored in analysis and problem-solving. It’s about envisaging the ideal outcome and reverse-engineering our strategies, guiding clients every step of the way towards tailored recruitment solutions. And I’m fortunate to be surrounded by an exceptional team here at Astrum, whose camaraderie and support make even the toughest days bearable.

What truly energises me are the partnerships we’ve cultivated with our clients – collaborations built on trust, where our recommendations are valued and embraced. Together, we navigate the intricate landscape of talent acquisition, ensuring the perfect fit between candidate and role.

In essence, my journey has been one of continual growth and evolution, shaped by experiences that have refined my perspective and deepened my passion for this ever-evolving field of recruitment.

What changes do you see happening in the recruitment industry in the next 12 months?

It’s evident that several key factors have significantly impacted the recruitment industry in recent years, and their influence is set to persist. Among these, the rise of remote and hybrid working models stands out prominently. This shift has necessitated the adoption of virtual recruitment tools to cater to a more global and mobile workforce. Virtual interviews, assessments, and job fairs have surged in popularity, reflecting the industry’s adaptation to this new landscape.

Furthermore, the integration of AI-driven tools and software has become increasingly prevalent, transforming search activities and screening processes. Chatbots, in particular, are being leveraged to streamline candidate interactions and enhance efficiency.

The focus on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) has intensified, with businesses implementing strategies to mitigate bias and enhance diversity across all levels. This emphasis on DEI is now an integral component of attraction strategies, reflecting a commitment to fostering inclusive workplaces.

Looking ahead, retention will emerge as a paramount concern for organisations. This necessitates a broader approach to recruitment solutions, emphasising skills and behaviour-focused hiring to mitigate attrition risks. Additionally, there’s a growing emphasis on upskilling and reskilling existing staff members, underscoring the pivotal role of Learning and Development (L&D) initiatives in talent management strategies.

In summary, the recruitment landscape is evolving rapidly, driven by a combination of technological advancements, shifting workforce dynamics, and changing organisational priorities. Adaptation to these trends will be crucial for businesses seeking to attract, retain, and develop top talent in the years to come.

What's one piece of advice you'd give to employers?

For me personally, the most significant and practical shift has been the increasing emphasis on personalised candidate experiences and the decline of advert-based recruitment. Nowadays, every role demands an executive search approach to unearth the best talent, sometimes the only available talent in the market. Clients now have to recognise the importance of showcasing their company, team, benefits, and career opportunities, tailoring them to each specific candidate’s preference.

It’s crucial to remember that employees form the backbone of any organisation, directly impacting its business outcomes. By prioritising their needs and fostering a culture of care and support, employers can cultivate stronger, more resilient teams poised for long-term success.

Is it too much to ask for? Not at all. Many clients are already grappling with these challenges, implementing more flexible packages, contracts, and working conditions to accommodate diverse needs. I’m hopeful to see more organisations seizing this opportunity to simplify our lives and enhance recruitment experiences for all involved.
